Nigeria Health Watch has introduced the Nigeria Health Watchers Network, a student ambassador initiative designed to cultivate future health advocates nationwide. The program targets students in medicine, pharmacy, public health, and allied disciplines, equipping them with competencies in evidence-based communication, advocacy, and community health engagement.

The inaugural cohort consists of 30 students chosen from 4,145 applicants. Spanning September to December 2026, the four-month initiative combines mentorship, content development, and outreach to strengthen participants’ grasp of Nigeria’s health system. Curriculum highlights include maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, universal health coverage, and health security.

The network fills a critical void: many graduates complete their studies without practical exposure to health policy or public engagement. By integrating academic learning with real-world practice, participants will learn to present complex health data in accessible formats. They will also establish connections with policymakers, health leaders, and peers through structured sessions and digital advocacy campaigns.

Unlike conventional training programs, this effort prioritizes sustained networking. Ambassadors will create original health content, promote campaigns on campuses, and contribute to broader advocacy initiatives led by Nigeria Health Watch. The program’s practical components, assignments, mentorship, and community engagement, ensure participants develop skills in media, storytelling, and evidence-based advocacy.

Participants will engage directly with health professionals and policymakers, gaining firsthand insight into decision-making processes. The program’s digital emphasis, through social media, blogs, and multimedia storytelling, aligns with how younger audiences now access health information. Upon completion, ambassadors will join a permanent alumni network, ensuring their impact persists beyond the four-month duration.

Nigeria Health Watch, which oversees the program, states its goal is to strengthen public engagement and contribute to a better and more responsive health sector in Nigeria. The program runs from September to December 2026.
